The Academic Resource Center is a place to find: No! You may stop by the ARC anytime during our regular hours, and someone will be here to help you with your paper! Although walk-ins are welcome, we encourage you to make an appointment if it is a busy part of the semester (such as the last couple weeks of classes). We also encourage you to come in more than 24 hours before the paper is due, so you will have plenty of time to revise it! When you bring your paper into the ARC, you will have a one-on-one meeting with a Student Assistant. She will help you to find what you need to work on in the paper and help you make a plan for development or revision. If you are stuck on getting an idea for your paper, need help brainstorming, organizing, drafting, or you need help proofreading, the Student Assistant will be glad to be of service We can't guarantee that you will get an A on a paper, and we can't tell you what your professor will think of a paper. We can't write or rewrite your paper for you, or correct all of your problems in 30 minutes. We can help you learn from your mistakes to become a stronger and more confident writer. No! We ask that you stay and work with the Student Assistant so that your meeting will be a learning process. The tutor will not correct your mistakes for you. She will help you learn from your mistakes and improve your writing skills. Yes! The ARC will help you proofread your paper. We will read through your paper with you, point out grammatical and punctuation errors, typos, and other mistakes, and show you how to correct them. That way, we hope you will learn to find and correct those mistakes for yourself in the future! They can help you correct grammatical and language problems in your papers and other assignments. They can also work with you on pronunciation and conversational skills in English. As an International Student, you are especially encouraged to take advantage of all of the ARC's resources as you get adjusted to college life in the United States! Call the ARC at x6278 to find out the name of a tutor in your subject. Once the semester begins, you will be able to access an online list of Peer Tutors you may contact. A Peer Mentor is someone who helps you achieve your goals! She will help you brainstorm and take advantage of the resources available at Sweet Briar to make the most of your life as a college student, both academically and socially. Peer Mentors are not just for students who are struggling to keep their heads above water. There is no set definition of "success." Everyone has room for improvement, and a Peer Mentor can help you reach your fullest potential. Call the ARC at x6278 and set up an appointment with Mary Jo Upchurch, ARC Coordinator to discuss Peer Mentoring. She will help "match you" with a compatible Peer Mentor. Check out Citing Internet Sources on the ARC web site! The ARC hires new Student Assistants each spring for the following academic year. If you are a strong writer, have experience in tutoring, or simply have a desire to help your peers in their academic lives, we encourage you to consider becoming an ARC Student Assistants. Watch for announcements or call Mary Jo Upchurch in the spring (early-mid March) to find out how to apply!
